DFB Cup first round begins – who progresses?

High-firing Borussia Dortmund travel to Munich today to trade tackles with 1860 Munich.

Dortmund has progressed through every first round DFB Cup fixture since 2005 till date and they also have a fantastic returns on goals from last season with an average of 3.5 goals per match.

On the other hand, ‘The Lions’ of Munich from the 2nd tier of Bundesliga have the chance of upsetting the Dortmund team with their current return of ten goals scored across their last two competitive games. Ironically, six of those 10 goals were scored against Dortmund’s second team.

A quick glance at soccer records reveal that Dortmund has a 50% win record against Munich with 9 draws, 14 losses and 23 wins out of their 46 competitive meetings till date. Dortmund also knocked their opponents out of the DFB Cup on three different occasions in 1963, 1981 and 2014.

1860 Munich lifted the DFB Cup in 1964 and Dortmund followed two seasons later to match their opponents DFB records of 1 DFB Cup win each then. These records have changed since after 1966.

Dortmund recently lost their talisman; Erling Haaland to Manchester City but still have a lot of firepower to dominate this match, while the one-time Bundesliga winners have Marcel Bar to rely on for goals.

Though the records favor Dortmund but our simulation says otherwise as 1860 Munich came out tops in the match. What are the odds 1860 Munich can replicate our simulation to glory?
